NHS70: ECZEMA!
- Categories Electronics, Music, Performance
I was asked by writer and researcher Maria Fusco to develop a system to capture data generated by a person scratching, with the aim of using that data in a musical way. This was for her play ECZEMA! commissioned by National Theatre Wales as part of the celebrations around the 70 year anniversary of the NHS.
I built a custom glove with accelerometers and handmade flex sensors that tracked the movement of the hand as it scratched the itches created by eczema. This data was captured in a special designed Pure Data patch which could then replay the movement at any speed. I passed this data to composer John Harris, who used it to create the music for the play on a giant digital pipe organ in the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
